 Two species are at war: the humans on Red Planet, which circles the sun, Alpha Centauri; and the hawkers, giant winged creatures that live on one of the three moons. Already the hawkers have attacked the humans twice and now are planning a third assault. The moons are collapsing and the hawkers have always taken whatever they wanted. Now they will take Red City.
A few brave young women and men in both species resist the restraints of their entrenched cultures. Many heroines lead with calm strength. In five compelling main dramas, first in the present a seventeen-year-old hero named Voxy escapes the boundaries of the great Red City on Red Planet. On an epic journey across an icy-cold mountain pass, he encounters a spiritual being that moves through time and communicates through thought. In the form of a white flying horse, Kai-Deeper carries Voxy into the past, before the monarchy and when the people governed themselves. "You are the bearer of the renewal," she tells Voxy.
Vlex’s wife was carried off by a hawker to the moons during the second attack, so he is stunned when a young female hawker seeks him out in secret. "I wish peace," Sra-La says. She proposes an alternative to the third attack. He is doubtful; however, she is wounded and he a healer, so he helps her. She tells him about his wife, Chrys-La, being her friend on the hawker moon.
The hawkers live on one of the three moons. Sra-La is young and impetuous and does things her own way—ways never done before by any female hawker. Independent of mind and will, when the human woman is dropped into the hawker nest of young females, Sra-La befriends her; so then do the others in the large nest. Chrys-La is undaunted and remains calm, despite being surrounded by winged creatures in this harsh foreign world that she can never escape. In exchange for the kindness of the female hawkers, she teaches them many new ideas, including an easier way to begin bloodletting as they enter womanhood. Emboldened by Sra-La’s independence and their new bonds of community—which they never had—the young female hawkers venture out of their nest, flying in ways never done by females. Over time, all females in all the nests adopt the strange new ideas, including how to deep listen.
The third hawker assault is imminent. The new Frax leader, a young warrior rebuffed by Sra-La, determines to take the humans’ Red City. Sra-La, with a different idea that could change everything forever between the hawkers and the humans, visits Vlex in secret on Red Planet and persuades him to help her convince other humans to trust her. On the eve of battle, amidst pandemonium, they trek with two humans over the high icy mountain to the barren red desert to dissuade the gathering bands of fierce young warrior hawkers.
Voxy returns to the present with stories of his journey and legends of the past, back to the Red City ruled by the vacuous king and queen, to restore self-governance to the people. "It is time to tear down our walls and once again mingle as a people," Voxy says. "It is time to share with the hawkers and no longer be afraid." The people are bewildered, the king and queen confused, and the legends of the hawkers are too old to remember. The people like things the way they are. They would rather apathetically obey the rules and rituals than risk losing everything familiar. But change will happen nevertheless. Voxy’s stories stir many minds, one at a time, and change begins to sweep through every heart.
Legends of Red Planet intricately describes the social lives of the two species, including their mating rituals. With appealing imagery, this fantasy novel is a mythology of two diverse cultures struggling to retain their identities. Yet the ancient secret proposed is so deeply inborn and instinctual that they only need to deep listen to discover it.
Wisdom imbues every page like a fragrance, bringing glimpses of a deeper theme that permeates the whole like the beads of the ocean make one, lending us a view beyond foreign worlds into inner dimensions. This absorbing drama goes deep and opens an inner space where the quiet is. The resonance that lingers is a deep calm.
